The events of the October Revolution of 1934 are still commemorated every year with publications, tributes to persons such as Aida de la Fuente, and with events which are held in the very buildings where the they took place (i.e the cloister of the University, the Cathedral, among others). The October Revolution of 1934 in part of the history and image of the city as It is part of its present.

The purpose of this project is to combine various perspectives (historic, geographic and tourism) in creating an itinerary and map for both tourism and memorial purposes with no other objective than to transmit knowledge about the city of Oviedo to both residents and visitors alike.

This project, was created in 2014 by an interdisciplinary team composed of historian Ruben García Riesgo, co-author of the book The Martyrs of Villafría; geographer Adrian Rodriguez Gayo; and the Local Tourism Promotion Course and FOREM Visitor Information Course led by Professor Sandra Martinez Salvador; all under the direction of the Juan Muñiz Zapico Foundation and in collaboration with the Regional Union of CC.OO. of Oviedo and the United Left Party of Oviedo.

BRIEF CHRONOLOGY

March 31, 1934. the Asturian Worker’s Alliance is signed
October 4. The radicals led by Alexander Lerroux form government with the support of CEDA. The workers respond with a call for a Revolutionary General Strike.
October 5. The Asturian Revolution begins with assaults of the garrisons in the coal mining valleys.
 
October 1934 in Oviedo
Day 4. The Revolutionary Committee is formed taking the slogan Uníos Hermanos Proletarios (UHP)
Day 5. The authorities declare the State of War. First night shoot out in Oviedo and the taking of positions in the outskirts of the city.
Day 6. Start of the rebel assault of the city. The rebel forces take the City Hall.
Day 7. The revolutionaries overtake the train engine depository at the North Train Station (present day train station at the end of Uria Street) and the police headquarters at the corner of Magdalena and Marqués de Gastañaga streets. Assault guard snipers flee and take refuge in the tower of the Cathedral . The Modelo Jail (nowadays Historical Provincial Archive) is attacked with an armored train from North Train Station.
Day 8. The Civil Guard Garrison in Pumarín is abandoned pressed by rebel forces. Rebel attacks on the Pelayo Garrison (now Humanities or Milan Campus) and the Vega Arms Factory are intensified. The University’s historical building is taken and the rebels abort an attempted response from the guards in the Santa Clara Garrison (now Internal Revenue Service).
Day 9. The revolutionaries take the Bank of Spain, the Asturian Civil Government and the Hotel Inglés. At dawn they assault the La Vega Weapon Factory (Fabrica de Armas) which has been abandoned by its defenders.
Day 10. The vault of the Bank of Spain is assaulted That night in Oviedo several buildings ( the Convent of San Pelayo, the Campoamor Theater, the Courthouse and the building that houses the newspaper Avance) are set on fire.
Day 11. The Holy Chamber of the Cathedral is blown up. Groups of protect the withdrawl of their forces in San Pedro de los Arcos, the Argañosa neighborhood and North Train Station. The troops of General Ochoa reach the headquarters of the Pelayo Garrison. The Revolutionary Committee flees Oviedo.
Day 12. The "Communist Committee" lines up in the Plaza del Fontán. Troops under Lieutenant Colonel Yagüe enter Oviedo by the Cadellada, the c/Tenderina and c/Rayo. The assault guard of the Santa Clara Garrison takes the Telefónica building.
Day 13. The Army takes the Económicos Station The revolutionaries defend the train station which is attacked from the jail by the African forces under General Yagüe. San Pedro de los Arcos is attacked and assassination of Aida de la Fuente. The University is destroyed. Thirty two civilians are slaughtered by regular troops in Villafría.
Day 14. The Army takes the City Hall. Army troops parade in the city while rebels continue fighting in San Lazaro and San Esteban in an effort to cover the retreat of their forces.
Day 15. Last shoot fired in Oviedo.
Day 18. Belarmino Tomás travels to Oviedo and negotiates the end of the revolution with General Lopez Ochoa in the Pelayo Garrison.

PRINCIPAL SCENARIOS IN OVIEDO DURING THE REVOLT

  1. Northern Perimeter: The Pelayo Garrison, formerly a seminary, in 1934 it housed the 3rd Infantry Regiment of the Republican Army. Today it is home to the University of Oviedo’s Humanities Campus (El Milan). Nearby was the Vega Arms Factory (today abandoned and known as Fábrica de Armas).
  2. Area around the Civil Government building and the Tower of the Cathedral. It’s defensive perimeter was formed by the Convent of San Pelayo and Arguelles, Jovellanos, Gascona and Águila streets.
  3. Area around the University of Oviedo’s historical building and nearby buildings on Arguelles street and Plaza Portlier.
  4. Santa Clara Garrison. This artillery garrison was located in the building which today houses the Internal Revenue Service, just behind the Campoamor Theater.
  5. Plaza de la Escandalera and Uría Street. There were machine gun nests in numbers 12, 18, 22 and 26 and in number 13 of the building known as Casa Blanca.
  6. North Train Station (today RENFE & FEVE Station) and Modelo Jail (now houses the Historical Provincial Archives).
  7. Oviedo City Hall was a key location of the rebel advance and the place where they established the headquarter of the Revolutionary Committee.
